The ecstasy and angst of being ‘different‘ are woven hilariously together by Sara Pascoe’s mighty, witty - pen

Sara Pascoe

For readers who haven’t (yet!) read ‘Weirdo’ can you tell us about it in one sentence?

It's a romantic adventure deep inside an Essex Girl's mind, finding humour in insecurity, paranoia and terrible sex.

As a highly successful stand-up performer and writer, how have you used these skills to write such an enticing novel? And how did you find the world of plot and subplots to achieve this great book.

I'm lucky with stand up that it teaches you to write write write all the time, to throw lots of ideas into the world and to try and be as authentic as possible. For the novel, I wrote very slowly, rewriting a great deal as I went along, in order to intersect the current day with the character's memories.

You hilariously celebrate being ‘different’ from the norm - why do you think this appeals so much to us?

I think it is probably universally human to worry about being strange and different and unlovable, so explorations of that make us feel better. It certainly makes me feel better!

Which witty novel inspired you the most growing up ?

I was a big Judy Blume fan. Not just for Ralph the Penis.

Where do you write? Do you need silence, crave music or manage with people drilling outside your window/other? Any writing habits gratefully received.

I write on trains or buses or in the backs of cabs, busy coffee shops, hotel reception areas. I find noise and bustle helps focus me.

Finally, can you tell us why you think CWIP is important?

The world has not given funny women their dues for a very long time.
